Something NEW Has Gotten Into the Matterhorn at Disneyland

matterhorn-ad-1978The Matterhorn Bobsleds has been one of Disneyland’s most iconic attractions since it first opened in 1959. Arguably, it is just as recognizable as Sleeping Beauty Castle, as no other Disney park in the world has a Matterhorn mountain dominating its skyline.

Over the years, the Matterhorn has seen many changes, the most notable coming in 1978, when Imagineers filled in the mountain, creating icy caverns, show scenes, and a new resident moved in – the Abominable Snowman. You kids old enough to remember certainly recall the company’s very successful “What’s Gotten Into The Matterhorn?” marketing campaign that was on television ads, billboards, and in print. Those Disneylanders born in the ’80s, ’90s or after, the Abominable Snowman has always just been there. Regardless, the monster (lovingly referred to as “Matterhorn Harold” by Cast Members and fans alike) in the mountain is one of the most popular and well-known attraction-based characters at any Disney park. And, he’s undergone a huge change in the past several weeks.

In the shadow of other Disneyland 60th Anniversary components, especially the new Paint the Night, Disneyland Forever, and World of Color – Celebrate! shows, the Matterhorn’s recent rehab/renovation has gone virtually unnoticed on everyone’s radar, despite the fact that the entire show inside the mountain has been changed. Even the long-anticipated return of the Hatbox Ghost at Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion has completely eclipsed what’s taken place inside the Matterhorn. The ride is no longer exactly “kid-friendly”, nor is it your daddy’s Matterhorn anymore…

TPA Haunts on Halloween at Chambers of the Mausoleum

chambers_halloweenHalloween is the busiest time of year for Theme Park Adventure, hands-down. In 2014, we have clocked 39 haunt stops into our schedule, from the end of September to November 2nd. Usually, we spend a quiet Halloween night having dinner out and enjoying “the finish line” aspect of our exhausting terror trek. However, once in a blue moon, Johanna and I slip out into the darkness somewhere to do some spooking of our own on Halloween night! Such is the case this season. We’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be joining our dear friends for a night of thrills and chills at Chambers of the Mausoleum in Corona, California!

Chambers of the Mausoleum is a unique, wildly-creative haunted attraction that is outstanding in the way of creativity, makeup and character design, and immersive environment fabrication. Operated by the amazing folks from Figment Foundry and Garner Holt Productions, Chambers of the Mausoleum is our haunt of choice to call “home” for Halloween night 2014!

Spring Nights at Sam’s 2 Brings Great Surprises!

IMG_0692On April 27th, we spent a fantastic Southern California evening under the tiki torches of Trader Sam’s at the Disneyland Hotel, and it was a blast! More than 75 TPAers from far and near converged on Anaheim for several hours of networking fun and delicious Polynesian cocktails; it truly was a wonderful time spent with some of the greatest folks anywhere.

The Spring Nights 2 crowd was an awesome mix of old and new friends coming from all over California – from San Diego, to San Francisco; it’s always mind-blowing to see how far TPAers will come each month to mingle! There were also some new faces, which we get really excited about – we love seeing the Theme Park Adventure community grow. Extra props to fans that come by themselves; that’s never an easy first step to take in any social situation.
