Ripley’s Believe It or Not! has returned to Africa for the first time since Robert Ripley – the modern day Marco Polo –  travelled the continent in 1933.

Ripley’s, in conjunction with Word4Word Marketing in South Africa, is opening a year-long, 12-city travelling show on July 31. The new show will visit a dozen shopping malls in several provinces.

Visitors will be able to explore 15 different pods, each with a unique theme and packed with artifacts, interactive exhibits and infographics. All together there are more than 130 exhibits from the Ripley’s collection.

The show even has some of the artifacts Robert Ripley acquired on his 1933 trek through Africa from Cairo to Durban, as well as original artwork that he drew when he was there.

World’s Largest Matchstick Model – Plane Loco – Purchased by Ripley’s Believe It or Not!

Ripley's Plane LocoA train bound for New York City is an ordinary event – but not when it’s a train made from one million matchsticks and its destination is Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square Odditorium.  Then you’re talking extraordinary!

The train measures 22 feet long, 13 feet wide and 9 feet high. It will become one of signature exhibits at Ripley’s Times Square after its installation on July 29.

Ripley’s commissioned the train from master matchstick artist Pat Acton. This is not just his largest creation, but it’s the biggest matchstick model in the world.

Acton spent 14 months building the locomotive in a steampunk style, complete with wings and interactive, working parts.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Unbelievable RipCycle Art Contest

Ripleys-King-KongThey say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. That’s the challenge behind the first Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Unbelievable RipCycle Art Contest.

Ripley’s is in search of artwork made from recycled or upcycled materials. Media could include metal, aluminum cans, cardboard, toilet paper, coffee filters, staples, toothpicks, wrappers – anything that might normally end up thrown away.

This King Kong was created from old tires! The goal? Turn that garbage into gold.

“We’re out to find amazing pieces – especially three-dimensional sculptures – that bring a smile to your face and make you say WOW! The more unusual the medium used, the better,” said Edward Meyer, Ripley’s VP of Exhibits and Archives. “This contest is a great opportunity for an artist to get worldwide exposure for their work.”

Ripley’s Commissions Jennifer Lawrence Peanut Portrait

Ripleys-Jennifer-Lawrence-Peanut-Portrait (1)She won an academy award for Silver Linings Playbook and wowed crowds in The Hunger Games, but Ripley’s Believe It or Not! will soon be featuring actress Jennifer Lawrence in a way she’s never been seen before – in peanuts.

Ripley’s commissioned Orlando artist Mateo Blanco to create a celebrity portrait, but with two conditions: it had to be a person from Kentucky and the media had to be something associated with baseball. Why? The artwork will be used for an upcoming baseball-themed show at the Louisville Slugger Museum (located in Louisville) next year.

Blanco chose the combo of Lawrence (born and raised in Louisville) and peanuts – 9,658 Planters Cocktail Peanuts to be exact.

The artist spent 400 hours on the portrait, painstakingly drilling holes to create the outline and then gluing peanuts into the wooden backing board – nut by nut.

Blanco soon discovered the perils of working in peanuts rather than paint; you can’t eat paint.
