California Condor Speaker Series at Oakland Zoo
On Wednesday, June 3, 2015, from 6:30pm – 9:30pm, Oakland Zoo welcomes the public to attend a Conservation Speaker Series about California condors – a bird that nearly became extinct in the 1980s, when the last living wild condor was taken into captivity and put into a breeding program to save the species. Today, there are more than 200 California condors living in the wild, with a large population near the Big Sur coastline.
Guest Speaker Kelly Sorenson, Executive Director of Ventana Wildlife Society, has been working to save these birds, with a nine and a half foot wingspan, since 1995. “Over the last twenty years, we’ve discovered condors are resilient, but we also learned about their greatest threats,” said Kelly Sorenson. Through field work, constant monitoring, nest watching, pair tracking, lead testing, and releasing condors back into the wild, he and his team have invested their careers into helping save this species.

Snow Leopard Presentation at Oakland Zoo
On Tuesday, February 10, 2015, from 6:30pm – 9:30pm, Oakland Zoo welcomes guest speaker Dr. Rodney Jackson, Director and Founder of Snow Leopard Conservancy. The public is invited to attend this engaging evening and learn how poaching and illegal trading of the snow leopard’s exquisite fur and highly valued body parts are putting the animal in significant danger.
Not only are these beautiful animals being poached, snow leopards are also seen as a threat to farmers. The big cats are known to hunt domestic livestock, which is fueling a feud of farmer versus snow leopard. “Animals all over the world are challenged by sharing their habitat with people,” said Amy Gotliffe, Conservation Director at Oakland Zoo. “The term ‘Human-Wildlife Conflict’ has become more well-known for a reason. Organizations like Snow Leopard Conservancy give us hope that these conflicts can find resolutions. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Jackson, who is renowned for conserving snow leopards. I know that this presentation will inspire our guests to believe that solutions to even the most complicated conflicts are possible, and that a peaceable kingdom for people and animals is in our future.” According to research by Snow Leopard Conservancy, it is estimated that there are only 4,500 – 7,500 wild snow leopards left in the world.

Wolves of California Speaker Series at Oakland Zoo
On Wednesday, January 14, 2015, from 6:30pm – 9:30pm, the public is invited to attend a Conservation Speaker Series focused on the California Wolf Center and efforts to reintroduce the gray wolf to California.
Oakland Zoo welcomes guest speaker Karin Vardaman, Director of the California Wolf Center. Ms. Vardaman will share an inspiring conservation story of the gray wolf and its possible return, after being absent in the state for decades. “Oakland Zoo is honored to welcome Karin Vardaman and the California Wolf Center to our Conservation Speaker Series,” said Amy Gotliffe, Director of Conservation at Oakland Zoo. “We hope wolves will inhabit California once again, and we are committed to being part of their secure future. We know public education about this charismatic animal is crucial to their success, and partnering with California Wolf Center is a wonderful step in that direction”.

A Future for Cheetahs Conservation Speaker Series at Oakland Zoo
On Thursday, September 18, 2014, from 6:30pm – 9:00pm, the public is invited to attend a Conservation Speaker Series featuring author Dr. Laurie Marker and wildlife photographer Suzie Eszterhas. Dr. Marker wrote “A Future for Cheetahs,” with striking photography by Suzie Eszterhas. The pair will present the problems facing cheetahs in the wild – with a focus on human wildlife conflict and what’s being done right now to save this species from extinction. “I am thrilled to have Dr. Marker and Suzie Eszterhas here at the Zoo to share their work and experiences with the community,” said Amy Gotliffe, Conservation Director at Oakland Zoo. “Cheetah Conservation Fund sets a wonderful example for other wildlife conservation issues, large and small. We are ready to be inspired.”
