Santa’s Village in California Opening Date Set for December 2, 2016

sv4It’s been a long time coming, but it appears that Santa’s Village in the San Bernardino National Forest finally has an opening date – December 2, 2016.

When it was first announced that the beloved old theme park in Skyforest had been bought by businessman/realtor Bill Johnson in 2014, fans everywhere became very excited; rightfully so. After closing its gates in 1998, the defunct Christmas-themed park sat abandoned and neglected for years, its wonderful old rides and whimsical buildings falling into a sad state of disrepair and ruin. Vandals left their mark on the closed park, as did the harsh seasons on the mountain just miles from Lake Arrowhead. Over the years, occasional interest was sparked by news of a potential buyer – but nothing ever came of it. When the property was purchased by Johnson, that was a huge step in the right direction, giving us all hope that the little theme park might be restored and returned to operation with a lot of love and a truckload of investment money. The price tag in 2014 for Santa’s Village was reported to be in the neighborhood of $5-6 million. When the 154-acre property was purchased, we cautioned strongly beginning with our May 15, 2014 story about the park possibly re-opening that it would require a lot more than that to get the property back up to modern codes, rebuild its infrastructure, add new attractions, and hire a year-round team, along with seasonal employees.

Since May of 2014, Johnson has had to wade through a sea of red tape with the county as costs have continued to rise. Several attempts have been made to open the park, and each time, the big event has been pushed for one reason or another.

During the very slow renovation of the property, Johnson and his team have released videos and blog updates, giving us all a glimpse into the ideas he has for the park. We’ve spent the last 2 1/2 years cautioning that what has been re-branded as Skypark at Santa’s Village is not what we all grew up with. Skypark at Santa’s Village is what’s called an outdoor adventure park – one that features “attractions” such as zip lines, ropes courses, biking trails, and rock wall climbs. Bill Johnson has been very straightforward about this since very early on. Sadly, the majority of the population only hears, “Santa’s Village” and gets instantly swept up in the joyous nostalgia of their youth, when the park was alive with themed flat rides, the Bumble Bee Monorail, Alice in Wonderland walk-through attraction, bobsled roller coaster, and a bunch of kooky walk-around characters. Skypark at Santa’s Village is not that. Johnson has made that very clear for years now. There won’t even be reindeer, and Santa – he’ll probably be seasonal.

The long-term vision for Skypark at Santa’s Village is just what we’ve explained in the past, and just what Bill Johnson has said himself time and again; see the video below.

In all honesty, I have had major doubts about Santa’s Village – or simply Skypark – ever opening, considering all of the setbacks Johnson and his team have suffered since purchasing the property. It’s my understanding that there are still issues in play and interest groups on the mountain that could ultimately get Santa’s Village shuttered again once and for all. If there’s ever been a great on-going themed entertainment drama, it’s the tale of Santa’s Village here in California.

Just when I was giving up all hope of the park re-opening in 2016, tickets have gone on sale. While there’s not been any major announcement as of the writing of this story, we’ve pegged the opening date of Santa’s Village to be December 2, 2016; that is the first date that you can buy tickets for, so unless there’s something wonky with their online ticketing program, it looks like December 2 is the big day.

While it’s certainly another huge step for the Skypark team, I can’t help but take notice of even more red flags. I don’t want to be a major downer or sound like a bad guy here – we never want to see any themed entertainment endeavor fail. Skypark at Santa’s Village has some major challenges ahead, in our opinion.


The biggest hiccup we see immediately is the price point to get in to Skypark at Santa’s Village. Guests 4 – 12 are $49. Guests 13 – 59 are $59. Seniors 60+ are $49. It is unclear if Santa’s Village parking will be free or an additional fee. In fact, there are a lot of things that are unclear at this point. We know that there will be a rock wall climbing attraction. We know there is supposed to be live entertainment. We know that the gift shops and Santa’s house have been rebuilt/refurbished. We also know that the Good Witch’s Bakery has been renamed/rebranded as The Gingerbread House. And, we know that there is an ice skating rink.

What we don’t know yet, is what kind of up-charge fees will be associated with these “attractions” when the park re-opens on December 2. Word is, people can bring their own ice skates for the rink – but really, who in Southern California has a pair of ice skates lying around? Rock wall attractions almost always have fees associated with them – but for the benefit of the doubt, let’s say that Santa’s Village throws that one in for free because we’ve all be good boys and girls this year. That’s still about $60 a pop to get into the park and at the very least, sit and watch people scale a rock wall or ice skate. We’ll assume that meeting Santa is free – and we’ll assume then that buying a photo of said meeting is also going to cost. There is supposed to be a restaurant and several food and beverage options at Santa’s Village, including likely beer and wine sales; those will certainly cost you as well.

We have been promised a lot of live entertainment – singers, characters, and everything else that makes the season bright. But honestly, can’t you get a lot of that at nearby Arrowhead Village for free, or elsewhere around Southern California this time of year at other theme parks? So I’m still stuck at the $60 gate price to come in, say hello to Santa Claus (there are no reindeer – this is a progressive Santa with a dog, instead), check out a couple shops, buy some food, and watch folks ice skate while strolling carolers sing Christmas songs. I’m not seeing where the value is here. If you’re a mom and pop taking two kids and a grandparent (because grandpa and grandma have fond memories of taking your folks to Santa’s Village when they were young), you’re already at almost $300 – and you haven’t even bought snacks yet!


I swear to you, I am not trying to sound like the Grinch here. I simply don’t want to see history repeat itself. What history, you ask? The fact that Santa’s Village closed in the late ’90s because no one was coming anymore; it couldn’t compete with nearby Orange County and its world-class parks, nor was there anything driving the locals to support the park any longer. I’m sincerely concerned that Bill Johnson and his team are setting themselves – and more importantly, Santa’s Village – up for its second failure in a big way. Santa’s Village now shares the market once again with SoCal’s other theme parks – all of which, including the Queen Mary (which is an attraction more than a “theme park”) all feature major holiday events and overlays that will go head-to-head with Santa’s Village for peoples’ holiday dollars. When you can buy a 2017 Season Pass to Knott’s Berry Farm for $90, or a single day ticket for $50, which includes all of the Knott’s Berry Farm holiday offerings – you see where I’m going with this, so there’s no need to beat this particular drum any longer. I don’t see a huge value in return for my $60 gate charge at Santa’s Village.

You may be familiar with Marty Sklar. Marty is an industry legend, notable for his involvement with Disney beginning in 1955 when he was hired by Walt and his team. Through the years, Marty rose through the ranks, eventually becoming President of Walt Disney Imagineering. During his career with Disney, he has been actively involved in the development with every Disney theme park to date, with the exception of Shanghai Disneyland – although you can bet more than a few Imagineers certainly sought his advice during the design process these past several years. It’s safe to say, Marty’s been around and knows enough to make some intelligent calls when it comes to the operation of a park.


Where are we going with this, since Santa’s Village is definitely not a Disney theme park? Marty is known for a list of design rules – often referred to as Mickey’s Ten Commandments. While all 10 rules of development are extremely important, I’m going to cut to the chase and go right to #1, which quite simply is, “Know your audience.”

Know your audience. That’s a big one, isn’t it? That’s the big one, actually. And in the case of Santa’s Village, I’m honestly not too sure that the team there does know their audience. The people who are excited about the return and re-opening of this park are adults who grew up with it, and their folks who remember taking them in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. Other than sitting around or walking through a gift shop or two, there’s really not much for older folks to do. And not many parents are likely going to be terribly excited by the prospect of rock wall climbing. Ice skating with their kids? Sure. That’s a given. But that’s not unique or special – and Santa’s Village should be. I circle back to the price point. $60 is a lot to ask for of folks who are going to likely spend most of their time wishing there was more to do, or leaving after an hour because they’ve seen everything and are feeling swindled out of their hard-earned cash. I don’t have an exact break-down of the demographics of residents living on the mountain; there are certainly some very wealthy folks living in the neighboring communities of Arrowhead, Running Springs and Big Bear. Most residents however, are average folks with mid-to-lower income. Skyforest isn’t Newport Beach or Beverly Hills, where the demo is much different and people don’t think twice about dropping $50 or $60 on a bit of entertainment.

Santa’s Village needs to appeal to and pull return business from locals. No one is going to return if they drop $60 and walk away vastly underwhelmed or disappointed. There aren’t going to be any second chances with this, folks. It’s GO time, and I am extremely worried that the Santa’s Village team have grossly miscalculated their gate worth and price point. At $19.99, I could see the park being packed with people looking for a fun afternoon or night out celebrating the holidays; up-charges like ice skates wouldn’t cause a second thought, because it’s still a good value. I’d drop Senior pricing down to the $15.99 range, because grandma and grandpa will want to join in the fun the best they can. But $60? With all due respect, I simply don’t see or get it. And believe me, I’m trying. I’m trying really hard here, because I know so many people are excited. Santa’s Village should be the best value for entertainment on the mountain – it should be a no-brainer, priced low enough that families will come back again and again to simply chill and have a great time together.


The last bit of reality here is that Santa’s Village, the best I can understand it, is opening with a temporary operation permit. The permanent re-opening of the park isn’t even a done deal yet – which is even more concerning if the attendance and/or reviews over the next few weeks are poor or even lukewarm. Santa’s Village really needs to be a hit at this point – there is a lot riding on it, from Bill Johnson’s financial and personal investment, to the residents who’ve signed on to be team members and really need these jobs. I just am having a hard time seeing how, at this point, Santa’s Village can or will be successful. Besides a few buildings, most of the nostalgia has been swept away (why would they change the name of the Good Witch’s Bakery, which was an iconic landmark for decades?), and just about everything fun and charming about the park has been replaced or removed.

Santa’s Village is in desperate need of a Christmas miracle in the worst way if we’re ever going to get to see the next phase of Johnson’s vision realized. To come all this way to see it all melt through their fingers – would truly suck.

We’re sincerely rooting for Santa’s Village. I don’t have much hope for it, unfortunately. It does not appear to me that they know their audience. I don’t think they know who their target even is at this point. And while I could be very wrong – I don’t pretend to know everything – in design terms, there just doesn’t seem to be any there there. A rock wall, skating rink and generic “mall train” do not return Santa’s Village to the place of childhood wonder and enchantment that it once was.

Fingers crossed here, Mr. Johnson. Please prove us wrong.

    Honestly, I think the biggest issue I have here is them keeping the name Santa’s Village. People are going to go just for the nostalgia factor, I’d hope that they’d do some research prior to going but we know that’s not going to happen.
    I’m glad the owners have stated that it’s not the same park, but people aren’t listening. They hear “Santa’s Village” and that’s it.

    That’s really disappointing that admission is going to be so high. I remember it being pretty reasonable on my last visit in early ’98. I recall reading in Fun World magazine that the “Alice” fun house was sold to a company in another state, in the southwest, I think (does anyone know if it’s operating somewhere?). Is the bee monorail returning or the Xmas tree go-round ride?

    The Alice in Wonderland walk-through attraction was a one-off; a permanent installation. It fell into disrepair and was ruined by vandals, animals and the weather on the mountain. Eventually, it was bulldozed. There are no plans of any of the flat rides returning to my knowledge; they aren’t interested in rides other than what they’ve outlined as their small attractions now and the adventure park-type of installations they hope to bring in next, like zip lines and ropes courses.

    The Bumble Bee Monorail is still in place, but does not work. Johnson has said that eventually, it will re-open with self-powered vehicles, which guests will have to pedal around the circuit, which pretty much eliminates grandparents or elderly guests probably being too excited about that. I know we’re not.

    Time to watch and see what comes next.

    i agree the price is out of control. My family wants to go, it will cost me $420 just to get in the park. That is a little steep. I think a lot of people will reconsider going with these prices. I know I’m not the only one that thinks this

    NO ONE is going to pay money to SELF PROPEL their own ride. I can imagine what the gift shops look like–tee-shirts in hideous orange and blue colors, that look like they were printed in the back of someones van. An ashtray with the logo (IS there a logo?) so small its blurry. And thats pretty much about the chouce you have because this poor guy is so dfrowning indebt, he can not afford to make up decent gifts. Therefore, there is no redeeming value at this park.

    Bill Smith, via a miracle, could find someone with money to buy him out, he can cut his losses, and the new owner, because he has massive amounts of money to invest in a park, turns it right back to what it once was. But no matter what, this park is going to be based on nostalgia, and can not compete with any of the other parks, as Rick, you stated. EVen the nostalgia factor is not enough to keep a park afloat, guests won’t be returning that many times, itll get old, quick.

    You are 100% accurate in your statements! I visited Santa’s Village as a child, and then after becoming a mountain resident, spent enjoyable days there with my children. Since it closed in 1998 I’ve become a grandmother and lamented that it was not open for my grandkids.

    My husband and I were fortunate enough to be a part of an invitation-only evening recently. I was pleasantly surprised at what we found. The restaurants’ samples were delicious. The stores were packed with a variety of unique and interesting items. There were roving groups of signers, jugglers, balloon artists, a fellow on stilts, many winter/holiday characters floating around and a jovial Santa allowing us to take our selfies with him. But – and this is big one – on our way home from a very enjoyable evening of walking around and soaking in the beautiful features and ambiance, we googled the ticket prices! There are currently no rides at all (as of our visit). The skating rink is in progress and is fairly small. The climbing wall looks cool, but it isn’t clear on their website if this will be at an additional charge. Ditto all of the attractions. Many of the attractions and features are NOT part of the Temporary Use Permit and are pending the overall approval of development of areas of the park which were not part of the original village. Their FAQs page says admission will include “rides”, but not sure how those are defined.

    I applaud Johnson for trying to create a new theme park model with zip lines, climbing walls and attractions that DO involve physical activity on the part of the participants. I think this great and would consider it for my grandkids, The $49 each for them might be reasonable once all of these attractions are available and operating at no additional charge. BUT, we won’t do it if it costs Grandma & Gramps $120 for ourselves to accompany them inside to do so.

    You are right – they need to look at their audience and expectations. Many great things are happening here and I can tell you initial appearances are that what is in place is first rate. I am hoping they look at their ticketing and consider chaperone tickets, seasonal tickets and local discounts before they regret not doing so.

    My first thought – when reading all of this – is that most of these supposed, “enticing attractions” are things that the average visitor to the mountain could get for FREE! With parts of Big Bear Lake frozen solid in winter; try slipping on ice skates up there. Hiking? Mountain Biking? Why pay Johnson money to do it on HIS property when there’s plenty of wilderness in the mountain to explore for FREE: Rock climbing? I’ve never had a better time of it then I have exploring off trail terrain in the local mountains; again for FREE. I don’t get it….something’s really off with this plan. You wait and see…. This new owner is trying to capitalize on what he knows will be a lot of people paying that steep price at first if for no other reason, so that they can complain to other people about it and warn them to stay away! Once this winter season slows down and things do NOT pick up for this park in the spring/summer; you’ll soon see “Two for the price of one” ticket pricing ads or “Weekday discounts”, etc…

    Thank you so much for the great insight! We are very curious – although not enough to drop $60 a pop to check it out. And something tells me that our honestly online probably hasn’t secured us a spot on Santa’s media invitee list.

    So at this point, we plan on watching from afar and see how the cards fall come December 2. It’s going to be very interesting.

    Temporary Permit is good til April 1. Tickets are only available from Dec 2 to Jan 8. This looks like a big push to rake in as much money as possible this Christmas season, to recoup money that has already been spent and ideally enough excess funds to finance the adventure park and other ongoing costs.

    It was previously mentioned that for $31 more, one can buy an entire year at Knott’s Berry Farm. ($59 vs $90)
    Another thought is that Southern Calif park attendees with annual passes are used to going to Disneyland, Knott’s or Universal on a whim, whenever they feel like going, if just for an hour, a few hours or a day. Three times per year or 100 times per year. No need to buy tickets in advance for a specific date. No need to request another date if you can’t make it on that date, request being made no later than 3 days before your ticket date. No need to fill out a waiver form before you can enter the park. Maybe these are just the rules for this season, and they have other ideas in mind for next year. We shall see.

    Pretty sure it opened with the park – if not, then shortly thereafter. It definitely was one of my favorite things to do whenever we’d visit in the ’70s when I was a little boy. I hate that it was reduced to rubble, but that’s what happens to these things, sadly. It wasn’t ever made to be transportable – so time and the mountain reclaimed it.

    Thanks for the clarification and for sharing your memories of visiting it in the ’70s! (Do you recall noticing any changes in it over the years?) I only went through it in early ’98. I noticed one similarity between it and some of Bruce Bushman’s art for Disneyland’s proposed “Alice” walk-through,* the giant table that you walked under. But I’m guessing that was coincidental. ………. Some day I’ll find my issue of Fun World that claimed Santa Village’s “Alice” had been sold to an attraction in another state (as I mentioned in an earlier post). However, even back then I thought it sounded strange since, as you say, it wasn’t exactly portable. ………… I thought that attraction had a lot of nice touches in it, like the reproductions of John Tenniel’s illustrations on some of the walls. …………. As much as I loved that attraction as an adult, I REALLY would’ve loved it as a child in the ’70s!!!! Oh well. …………. I’m thinking of checking out that Queen Mary “Alice” attraction!. ……….. *which of course was replaced by the ride that opened in 1958.

    Wow! My son and I went December 11, 2016. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the price point was not that extravagant for a day trip to the mountains. The gift shops had beautiful/unusual items. The Gingerbread Man and Hot Cocoa were delicious. The ice skating rink was great and we could skate multiple times. Santa and his crew of helpers/entertainers were so genuinely kind and engaged with the children and patrons, especially when waiting in lines. Quaint, pleasant, nostalgic, and beautiful. We had a great experience and look forward to returning next year!

    That’s great that you had such a good time at Santa’s Village at Skypark! The attraction is definitely getting black and white mixed reviews – seems that folks either really love it, or they feel it’s a waste of money; kinda hard to find someone “in the middle”. Across the board, even those who are not happy about the gate price say that the staff is fantastic, and that the food is very good – whether it be cookies or full-on meals. So it sounds like the front-line team is on point, and that someone is handling the kitchen(s) well. Now, if they could get the gate price to where the general public will be unflinching, I’d say that the park has a shot. I know that the company has been scrambling to alter its pricing for locals and that has proven helpful. It’s still too soon to know what the overall picture is coming out of Santa’s Village; my guess is, we’ll have a clearer idea after Christmas, once the “theme” is in the rear-view mirror and 2017 is underway. Again, glad you guys had a positive experience! Happy Holidays!

    Thank You for the eMail, but I have absolutely zero interest in any kind of “Outdoor Adventure.”

    The ONLY thing I want to see is a Santa’s Village FULLY Restored to its original state, complete with ALL whimsical buildings, props, rides, and walk through attractions. Anything less than this will be completely ignored by me, and everyone I know, and it sounds like everyone on sites like Theme Park Adventure…..

    So, a lot of people await notice that you have fully restored Santa’s Village.

    It is now 5/30/2017 I am waiting to take my Daughter who is 33yrs old and my grandchild 11yrs old, I grew up going to this place in the 1965, 67, and so on. I am now 55yrs old with Alzheimer’s and this is my last of last chances to show my family my favorite place in the world, and my greatest memories. Make this happen open up these doors, find the funding, if I had it I would give to you but I don’t have a penny to my name! So this is all I can leave my family with a life time of memories like I had. Thank you very much. Grandma Sunshine Ladybug.

    Why not just have One Flat rate of $150.00 per family of 5# regardless how many show up, and $15.00 extra for each additional person in the group regardless of age. “Infants are free!” Parking is $10.00 for the spot for the visit. Most seniors will come with grandkids its still $150.00 regardless. and most will come with the entire family. Seniors prices is not needed. If a “individual” wants to come its $60.00 for the entire day plus rides.

    Make it simple: Make all Food and Drinks Prices so consumption is able, most kids go hungry because prices are too high, so keep this cost reasonable, $3.50 per child, $5.50 per adult and $2.50 per senior is how it should be, Give healthy foods, (Salads, vegetables, fruits, breads, cakes). or (Sandwich , vegetable’s, fruit and cake). No more choices. Have grape juice, orange juice, apple juice stands for $1.50, have Coco stands for $1.50 with a candy cane inside to stir with. have stuff toys for $15.00 to $25.00, have Santa elf’s hats or shoes for $10.00 and outfits for the kids for $10.00 made out of felt. Make it fun for them. Have give always every hour to kids with drawings when you purches tickets, have games and let kids win candy canes, or “Rudolf’s noise so bright” with antlers headbands. Slay rides for Free for all, like most places do, no charge. Sell T-shirts for $4.00 infant, $6.00 toddlers, $8.00 kids, $10.00 teens, $15.00 Adult, XXX sizes $18.00 Seniors $5.00 55 and up. Most grandparent’s will be taking kids so make it easy for them.

    wheel chairs are $15.00 for the day, Electric are $55.00 for the day, Kids strollers are $15.00 and Twin strollers are $20. for the day.

    Give discounts to local Motels and Hotels, $125.00 and 1/2 off family tickets for the park, put they still have to pay for parking.

    Give restaurants that serve clean meals a discount of #25.00 off family packages including motel/ hotels.

    Once you have cliental you can raise the prices over the next 20yrs but lets open the doors and get the people in.

    Next you can use local volunteers to help and run the rides, clean, and prepare the meals, seniors would love this, they can’t make $ do to S.S limits but they can enjoy the company and watching the kids laugh and play, its great for them. You can offer them meals, and over night sleeping if needed for long distant. since the park needs to run and kept running its going to take a lot of people to keep it clean. Volunteers are great and most places use them so start thinking of this, its not about hiring teenagers it does not work, you need Adults and people that want to work to keep this place open. Later in a year or so, you can start paying wages but to get this place up and going its going to take a community to help so work together to make it happen.

    Think big. If you want more information please just send me a Email, I will be happy to work things out for you, I just need this place up and going asap… I’m in Palm Springs so its just a hop skip and a jump to get too you.
    I don’t know how many years I have left, I’m in stage 4 out of stage 7 Alzheimer’s. hurry I’m running out of time, soon I wont even know my own children or my grandchild, I have to leave them with a memories at least something to remember me by. Sunshine Ladybug…
