When you think of Universal Studios Hollywood and its signature annual events, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Halloween Horror Nights, or perhaps Grinchmas, right? How about Lunar New Year? It’s a biggie at the Southern California theme park. Beginning January 21, guests will be able to meet Mandarin-speaking Megatron, enjoy special Chinese food treats, and celebrate Lunar New Year 2017 with many of their favorite characters, who will be wearing traditional festival attire throughout the event.
Speaking of characters, Lunar New Year 2017 brings new, familiar faces to Universal Studios Hollywood – Po and Tigress, from DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda franchise!
Located within Universal Plaza, across from the entrance to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter on the park’s Upper Lot, the Lunar New Year celebration is a cultural celebration that invites families and guests of all ages and race to participate and enjoy. The main entryway into the Plaza is to be adorned with classic red Chinese lanterns and a beautiful plum blossom arch. Once inside the festival area, guests will be able to partake in really fun character meet-and-greets, as well as enjoy Asian treats including as pastries as they take in the elegant decorations and banners featuring the 12 animals that make up the Chinese Zodiac.
While simple and contained within a fairly small footprint inside the theme park, Lunar New Year is a very well-attended event, drawing not just Asian guests but everyone – visitors and locals alike who stop and take pictures of the beautiful plum blossoms or watch Mandarin-speaking Megatron interact with everyone. This event can get crowded as folks migrate into Universal Plaza to check it all out, but we’ve never seen it so crazy that it’s not fun or doable.
Our weather here in Southern California has been touch-and-go lately. In the event of rain, the Lunar New Year operations have been moved inside, to the Globe Theatre, next to the Despicable Me attraction on the Upper Lot. We can’t say for certain that this will be the case this year if the rains come – but it’s been the plan of action in the past.
Now is a great time to head to Universal Studios Hollywood. Lunar New Year 2017 simply adds one more reason for you to get up the hill and ride the movies! More information and ticketing can be found online at UniversalStudiosHollywood.com.
We’re excited to check out all the fun in the weeks ahead for ourselves, and will be sure to share our findings with you here on Theme Park Adventure. Happy Lunar New Year, everyone!
