The folks at Universal Studios Hollywood have ushered in the 2015 Lunar New Year, and have decorated Universal Plaza very nicely for the popular Chinese holiday! Between the construction walls and Upper Lot attractions such as Shrek and Despicable Me, guests will find Universal Plaza packed with plum blossom trees, golden coins, festive characters and more!
Obviously, Southern California has a very large Chinese population, and the theme park definitely attracts thousands of Asian tourists each day as they visit the Los Angeles area. More so each year, theme parks are going up and beyond to acknowledge the Lunar New Year and make a big deal out of it for their guests. This is something major resorts and casinos in areas such as Las Vegas have done for years, spending a great deal on elaborate displays and entertainment to mark the Chinese holiday.
Universal Studios Hollywood celebrates the Lunar New Year, 2015 being the Year of the Ram, every day through February 28. In Universal Plaza, guests can find various Universal characters such as Woody Wooodpecker, Curious George, and a Mandarin-speaking Megatron, which makes quite the loud entrance when he arrives to tolerate greeting humans and posing for pictures with them!
Guests are also invited to write messages on complimentary red cards and attach them to any of the plum blossom wishing trees that are placed throughout the Plaza. We witnessed many families of all races participating in this activity, everyone really enjoying the sentiment and means that Universal has provided.
Universal Studios Hollywood even went so far as to specially design Lunar New Year overlays for their food and beverage carts in the Plaza, rounding out the theming very nicely!
There are several water pop jets that are working to entertain children as they wander through the Plaza, and additional water misters switched on, blowing cool clouds across the legs of guests as they pass by. During the weekend, Universal Plaza can become crowded as guests flock to see the festive characters and partake in the Lunar New Year celebration, so if you’re a local, it may be easier to check this event out during the week. We were initially concerned that Lunar New Year would only operate on the weekends as Grinchmas does during much of its run; however, since this is only a short-term addition to the park, Lunar New Year in Universal Plaza will be in operation each and every day through February 28th!
Kudos to the team at Universal Studios Hollywood for putting together a very neat, really beautiful Lunar New Year presentation – it’s a hit with guests, and definitely putting smiles on the faces of everyone that stops by to check it out!
Happy Lunar New Year from Universal Studios Hollywood!
