On June 29, 1978, Magic Mountain debuted the world’s tallest and fastest roller coaster; a wooden behemoth aptly named Colossus. For decades to come, it would serve as an icon to the thrill ride industry and would go on to be featured in more movies and television shows than any other coaster in history, most notably National Lampoon’s Vacation.
While Colossus was fairly well maintained over the years, with some modifications along the way, roller coasters at Magic Mountain as well as around the world got bigger, faster and more thrilling – including wooden coasters. The question always loomed in the back of fans’ minds – how much longer would Six Flags Magic Mountain want to maintain Colossus, and what would its ultimate destiny be?
The answer began to reveal itself last year, when Magic Mountain announced that the famed wooden coaster would close permanently on August 16, 2014. The news created huge buzz throughout the fan community as well as themed entertainment industry. What would become of the legendary Colossus? Would it be destroyed to make room for new rides or a new, modern roller coaster? One rumor that seemed to prevail, was that the coaster would be converted into a hybrid – steel track built on top of the original structure of Colossus. That rumor seemed to make a lot of sense; there are no other hybrid coasters on the West Coast, and one would lend itself nicely to Magic Mountain’s huge selection as the coaster capital of the world. Additionally, it would be cheaper to convert Colossus into a hybrid than demolishing the entire structure and then building something from scratch on its huge footprint. Like everyone else, we waited with great anticipation to see what would take place.

WhiteWater has collaborated closely with The Looping Group to deliver a new world-class waterslide to Aquaparc in Le Bouveret, Switzerland. Opened to the public in late March, guests now have the opportunity to brave Europe’s first Fusion Waterslide, aptly named the Houla Hoop.
The project posed a unique design and installation challenge of fitting a large amount of new fiberglass into a tangle of waterslide flumes. Squeezed tightly amongst the existing waterslides, the massive and brightly coloured Houla Hoop waterslide had to be carefully positioned by WhiteWater’s skilled slidepath designers.
“Our team developed a detailed complete 3D environment of the site that allowed us to minimize any potential interference with the existing structural supports and waterslides. It was a challenging and fun project,” comments WhiteWater Slidepath Designer Marco Lechuga.

The sun has set on Theme Park Adventure’s Spring Nights at Don’s mixers for 2015, as the season has come to an end, and a new sun is about to dawn on summer! On Sunday, May 17th, TPA fans gathered once again at Don the Beachcomber in Huntington Beach for a fun night of mixing, mingling, tiki cocktails, great food, and good friends during our Spring Nights at Don’s 3 social mixer!
The great thing about TPA mixers, is that you never know who’s going to show up! Theme Park Adventure has a broad fan base of young folks, older folks, theme park fans, haunters, and industry professionals – a completely unique mix of characters under one roof for a few hours each month with a level playing field; everyone is open and accessible in the spirit of friendship and community!
Don the Beachcomber, which is on Pacific Coast Highway between Huntington and Seal Beach (it’s located at Sunset Beach) and is a hot locals spot that rolls out the red carpet for Theme Park Adventure, and turns over its private Hidden Village room, which is a fantastic space very reminiscent of the old Tahitian Terrace at Disneyland back in the day. We love the whole tiki vibe, and it’s always fun to be near the beach here in Southern California, so Don’s is a perfect match for us!

For the first time in nearly 30 years, Knott’s Berry Farm has opened a brand-new dark ride; Voyage to the Iron Reef. This 4D “shooter” is housed in the same show building that has been the home to previous dark rides at the theme park – Knott’s Bear-y Tales, which opened in 1975, followed by Kingdom of the Dinosaurs, which took its place in 1987. Over the years, the KOD space also doubled as a haunted attraction for the park’s wildly-popular Halloween event, Knott’s Scary Farm.
Knott’s Berry Farm’s Vice President and General Manager, Raffi Kaprelyan has wanted a new dark ride at the Farm since he was placed there as part of the executive management team by Cedar Fair several years ago. And, like most theme park executives, Raffi made it clear that he wanted an interactive experience for families to enjoy together; in industry speak, that means a “shooter”, in the same style as Toy Story Midway Mania at nearby Disney California Adventure in Anaheim. In 2014, construction was underway in the space across from the Charles Schulz Theatre; the remnants from Kingdom of the Dinosaurs were completely gutted and once the structure was cleaned up and made ready for the new ride, the project moved forward at a breakneck pace.
